love it…the piece and the poem.
when the world seems so very wobbly stitching is the only thing that will do…
Gorgeous Mo, so soft and gentle, and the words by Emily Dickenson are beautiful. Could you tell me what poem it is? Evaline is awesome! I can just see those crows in my childhood bathroom. We had an old chip heater like that, until my brother in law burnt it out, then we had to cart water in buckets from the old wood copper in the wash-house. The good old days. Just love the way you have interepted this song. Looking forward to seeing it finished. Marg. ox
Hi Marg thanks for your kind & encouraging words on this wobbly day
Here’s the full text of “Hope is the thing with feathers” by Emily Dickinson
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me
What a nice piece. Did you sew right through the paper or mount it after
Hi Michele, the letters were cut out of printmaker’s mull which I pasted lightly with a Pritt Stick to some fabulously thick handmade Japanese paper (sponged off the excess and then cooked it on the heater for a few minutes to cure) then edged each letter with some rough spun cotton couched down with a thin Japanese cotton thread (pricking the holes first only occurred to me halfway through but I’ll know better next time) then that was stitched onto hand deckled Arches watercolour paper with those x’s in the 4 corners, the feathers & wishbone added last… next time I will try pricking out the “hope” first as a cursive continuous line and couch down a single thread… there’s a whisper of an idea out the corner of my eye of what hope could look like but each time I try it doesn’t quite get there… hope is such a fragile strong resilient thing that we all know and need, it keeps us alive!
i really like this piece. it’s beautiful.
this piece touches me. You’ve so beautifully expressed that hope, so strong and fragile. thanks for making this.
thank you Sharmon, this life can be so very fragile and fleeting… it’s important to drink in every bit of beauty we can find and hope always finds a way
Oh this is so beautiful!
