here’s the first rough sketch in soft white pencil for the next Old Man Crow song Beauty (just click on the link to listen)
Jackie Morris has given me permission to use this fabulous photograph of Merlin one of the 7 ravens who live in the Tower of London
you can read all about Jackie’s meeting with Merlin, some friendly wolves and even the crown jewels here
will work with black paper this time using Titanium White Golden fluid acrylic, Dr Ph Martin’s bleed proof white and white coloured pencils with black calligraphic ink for those deep darks ’round the eyes and the edge of the wing for the first verse:

I see it all around
Yeah, beauty,
While a whipping’s coming down
It’s sight and smell and touch
While I’m rattling the cage door,
Kicking at the hutch”

seems apt as although the ravens in the Tower of London are beautifully kept & have a great life, they do have their wings clipped as we all do in some way or another…the wing will morph into a vision of the night sky… with a crow perched on a Sputnik-like satellite for the line
“Put me on a satellite
Shoot me into space”
It’s a fairly complete vision already totally sparked by Jackie’s great photo now I just have to work at getting it right!

oh what a magnificent bird and the photo is perfect. you captured Merlin so well in your sketch. I always love seeing the patterns on the wings of birds. also enjoyed reading Jackie’s adventures with the animals.

    • Mo Crow says:

thanks for the encouragement Deanna! your beautiful lacework is a great inspiration for attempting to draw the lacy patterns of the light in the wings. In looking at the Love Lace exhibition (that’s on here in Sydney for another year) the white lace works better than the black, it reveals and conceals more mysteriously, for many years I worked as a glass engraver carving the light, feels good to get back to it!

inspiration is everywhere, isn’t it. we only have to do more than look… we need to ‘see’ and you do that so well.

  2. Oh Mo–Beauty is a beauty and your cover perfect–how I enjoyed that Jackie post-saved it and view it, especially the wolf sanctuary (though their videos are too small) over and over. Music is magic! You and the man might enjoy “The Music Is The Magic” (a 28 minute tribute to the great Abbey Lincoln contains that song, and others)

  3. PS
More–My favorite Abbey Lincoln-her own voice-this song-I own the CD and play it obsessively

  4. Valerianna says:

Beautiful bird… I do so love ravens. One was croaking along with the frogs today in the forest.
Wonderful rough sketch, you’ve captured that reflective quality the feathers have so beautifully!

I didn’t know that about the ravens in the tower of london and their clipped wings. Wow.
