Weighing of the Heart

plate 3 from The Papyrus of Ani

The ancient Egyptians believed that at the first gate to the afterlife the heart was weighed against Maat the feather of truth, if the heart balanced with the feather the soul could continue on in it’s journey into the glorious afterlife but if it weighed heavily the crocodile headed god Ammut would gobble your heart up and that was the end, no happy hunting grounds & no going back to go and starting again! The pathways of the heart are sometimes thorny  & making the bandaged hearts is taking me into some surprisingly deep waters!
