dragonfly dreaming

Suzanne Duce (inspiring friend & teacher in things of a magical nature) wrote an article about her recent meeting with the 13 Grandmothers in issue no 72 of  Sacred Hoop, I particularly related to this moment;
“Agnes told us a story of how her tribal ancestors had transformed into dragonflies, suddenly many dragonflies flew among the gathering, landing on people, like blessings.”
Dragonflies are such beautiful jewels of the insect kingdom, every encounter with them has an air of magic & portent for me. I rummaged through all my old sketch books & dug out this drawing of a dead dragonfly found on the first day of attending a glass engraving workshop with  Jiri Harcuba at the Pilchuck Glass School in Washington in August 1989.

but the most magic day was one I didn’t draw or photograph… sitting in a bright yellow dinghy with Roderick at dawn on Myall Lakes helping hundreds of electric blue damselflies dry their wings by ever so gently turning the boat in the soft morning light & watching each one take flight for the first time… such a private moment for each one and our helping was not really necessary,  they would have managed without us but being shown the moment of first flight over & over… the fluidity & stillness, the dipping of the oars, the contrast of the misty surface of the lake with the bright yellow rowboat and the brilliant blueness of the damselflies, we were in the presence of a miracle of flight & transformation… a moment that will live inside me forever. Here’s a photo of the dinghy and the houseboat on the lake back in 1996.

    Wonderful. That drawing looks like its a common blue darner? I had an amazing experience once in my garden – in a sea full of dragonflies. Ten feet up and twenty feet out in all directions – nothing but dragonflies. Pasha cat and I were entranced… and it took us a while to recover. All of a sudden the whole mass moved up and into the sky. I’ve never looked at those blue darners the same since… there’s a lot more to the story, but nuff said here!!
